Synergies between Chemistry and Nanotechnology: possible solutions to impossible challenges

There are currently “impossible” challenges in our lives and in our society that are approached but not won, so far, though our knowledge and our possibilities in science have reached incredible levels, especially in the last decades. Often, these challenges need a multidisciplinary approach, in which the collaboration among different fields makes the solution closer and within reach. Chemistry and Nanosciences are disciplines apparently far from each other, linked by the small size of the objects they study. Chemistry is an old discipline, permeates our lives in all its aspects, while Nanoscience is a young field, born out of the invention of high resolution electronic microscopes.
During this talk, we will discuss how the synergy between Chemistry and Nanotechnologies offers incredible possibilities. In particular, we will propose revolutionary therapies and how, maybe one day, solar light may help us produce the energy necessary to feed a rapidly growing world.

Speakers from prestigious research and innovation realities of the territory, like DTA (Distretto Tecnologico Aerospaziale), DITNE (Distretto Tecnologico Nazionale sull’Energia) as well as CETMA (Technologies, design and materials european research centre ), will be invited to talk about recent developments, new horizons and challenges in the field of sustainable technology advancement, clean energy production and aerospace. The explosion and the rapid diffusion of digital data linked to all human activities poses interesting questions about their management and analysis modalities. In this context supercomputing evolves rapidly in order to respond to the changing needs in terms of computational codes and modelling paradigms. In particular, we are witnessing the diffusion of more and more refined techniques of automatic learning by supercomputers, based on the extensive use of non-traditional computational resources distributed on clouds. Some of these techniques will be presented with attention to the application cases, sand the relapses that these new approaches have on research will be highlighted. ENEA, with the supercomputer CRESCO6, the most powerful supercomputer of Southern Italy with its 700 thousends of billions operations allowed per second, promises new possibilities for the data science and 4.0 industry.

The workshop will be dedicated to the alarming problem of plastic waste. Researchers from startups and research centers will present their green solutions to recycle and replace plastics. In particular, the main topics of the workshop will be marine litter recycling, green packaging, sustainable building employing synthetic and natural insulators, packaging 100% green from dairy waste, diapers recycle to obtain toys, eco-skin generated by the bacteria of vinegar.

Researchers will present some research topics concerning sustainability. Some of the discussed items will be the development of smart coating for food-packaging, polymeric electronics, the realization of innovative composites for the substitution of critical materials, recycling of carbon fibers, renewable energy resources, the employ of agri-industrial wastes, the exploitation of biomass. The aim of the workshop is to highlight how the choice of sustainability allows the development of processes and technologies which are able to guarantee economic savings and low environmental impact. A cultural revolution is traversing the research world and is reaching citizenship for the promotion of a critical use, an ethical consumption of resources and the development of new sustainable lifestyles.

Lampi di genio-quiz scientifico

Going down into the nanoworld, light will be shed on some phenomena closely linked to the nanostructure of the materials: how does the gecko manage to walk on the ceiling? Why the nasturtium leaf is hydrophobic and self-cleaning? Are all colors due to pigments, or are some colors are related to particular nanostructures? For example, what is the bright blue of the morpho butterfly wings due to? And the iridescence of the plumage of some birds or the cuticle of some insects? Photoluminescence is typical of some flowers or insects. Is it also a property that can be given to certain materials by nanostructuring them? This and much more in a challenge: the teams will compete on the Kahoot platform. The approach to the solution of the questions will be that of the scientific method: three hypotheses will be proposed to explain the scientific phenomenon, two of which will be false and one true. The validity of the exact answer will be demonstrated by providing experimental evidence and literature results. Likewise, evidence will be used to refute false answers. Some experimental tests, useful to confirm the answer to the questions, will be collected by the students participating the quiz. Players will therefore be induced to use the scientific research method to solve the proposed riddles. The main objective of the activity will be to show how the scientific research method is the only one able to bring us to the understanding of natural phenomena. It will also be emphasized how the researchers were inspired by nanostructures present in nature to create materials with innovative properties. So, hand on the phone … let the challenge begin!

CEDAD-Centro di Fisica Applicata, Datazione e Diagnostica, Edificio-A1-Cittadella della Ricerca


L’attività si svilupperà attraverso seminari brevi, filmati, e visite ai laboratori del CEDAD-Centro Fisica Applicata, Datazione e Diagnostica sui seguenti temi:

1) Come funzionano gli acceleratori di particelle
2) Siamo tutti radioattivi
3) Le tecniche fisiche per il monitoraggio ambientale e la diagnostica dei beni culturali
4) Come si datano i reperti archeologici
5) La Fisica applicata alla Medicina
6) Il radiocarbonio per lo studio degli eventi cosmici
7) Come si studiano i materiali con fasci di particelle
8) ITALUS: l’albero più vecchio d’Europa

Le attività prevederanno la visita dei laboratori del CEDAD e della sala acceleratore e si svolgeranno anche nella sala convegni e in altre postazioni dedicate presso l’edificio che ospita il CEDAD.

The activities will allow also the visit of the CEDAD laboratories and of the accelerator hall. Seminars will be organized in the CEDAD conference room.
